বেশ রাত হয়েছে। বাড়ির দোতলার জানালায় মুখ দিয়ে বসে আছে অনিক। আকাশে চাঁদ ঢাকা পড়েছে মেঘে। লাইট পোস্টের টিমটিমে আলোয় আঁধার কাটছে কমই। হঠাৎই আঁতকে উঠল। কালো বিশাল একটা ছায়ামূর্তি কোন এক ভোজবাজিতে যেন হাজির হয়ে গেছে জানালার সামনে। হায়, প্রায় দোতলার সমান উঁচু ওটা। ভয়ে চিৎকার করার ক্ষমতাও যেন হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। ভূত বলে তাহলে আসলেই কিছু আছে। এর পরই স্বর বেরোল। গলা ফাটিয়ে চেঁচিয়ে উঠল। তার চিৎকারের শব্দ মিলিয়ে যেতে না যেতেই অট্টহাসি হাসল ওটা। আরে গলাটা কেমন চেনা চেনা লাগছে। এর পরই মুখের মুখোশটা এক ঝটকায় সরে গেল। আরে এ যে তার বন্ধু অন্তু। কিন্তু ও এত লম্বা হলো কী করে। এরপর নিচের দিকে তাকাতেই বুঝে গেল রহস্যটা। হেসে দিল ফস করে। অন্তু রণপা পরেছিল।
রণপা কথা প্রথম সম্ভবত পড়ি কুয়াশা সিরিজের একটি বইয়ে, ক্লাস ফাইভ-সিক্সে পড়ার সময়। তারপর থেকেই বেশ আগ্রহ তৈরি হয় এর সম্পর্কে। সেই সূত্রেই এই লেখা। শুরুতে বরং রণপা জিনিসটা কী জেনে নেওয়া যাক। আমাদের দেশের রণপা সাধারণত তৈরি হয় বড় বাঁশ বা লাঠি দিয়ে। লাঠিটা হয়তো আট-নয় ফুট লম্বা থাকে। লাঠির ছয় ফিট ওপরে পাদানির মতো থাকে। দুই লাঠির দুই পাদানিতে দুই পা রাখতে হয়। এরপর এক পা এক পা করে এগোতে হয়। এক কদমে কত দূর যাওয়া যায় একবার ভেবে দেখো। তা ছাড়া মজাটাও তো কম নয়। আজ থেকে বছর পঁচিশেক আগেও রণপা নিয়ে খেলায় মেতে উঠতে দেখা যেত ছোট ছেলেমেয়েদের। অনেক দেশের শিশুরাই এটা খেলত। রণপা নিয়ে এখনো মজা করে অনেকে। একজন লোককে বিশাল বিশাল পা ফেলে হাঁটার যেমন সুযোগ করে দেয় এটি, তেমনি অনেক লম্বা লম্বা মানুষের মাথার ওপর দিয়ে দেখতেও পারে সে। আবার ভেবে দেখো, কোনো একটা গাছে ময়না পাখি কয়টা ডিম পেড়েছে রণপা পরে উঁকি মেরে অনায়াসে তা দেখে নিতে পারো। গাছে চড়া না জানলেও কোনো সমস্যা নেই।
প্রথম রণপা জোড়া কে তৈরি করেছে নিশ্চিতভাবে তা বলা মুশকিল। প্রত্নতাত্তিক ধ্বংসাবশেষ আর দলিল-দস্তাবেজ বলছে, খ্রিস্টের জন্মের ৬০০ বছর আগেও প্রাচীন গ্রিসে রণপা পরে চলাফেরা করত মানুষ। এদিকে পিয়েতের ব্রুঘেল নামে বেলজিয়ামের এক নামি শিল্পী ছিলেন। ৪০০ বছরেরও বেশি আগে তখনকার ছেলেমেয়েদের খেলাধুলার একটি ছবি এঁকে গেছেন তিনি। আশিটির বেশি খেলার ছবি এঁকেছেন শিল্পী, যার একটি রণপায়ে হাঁটা। তবে সব সময় যে শুধু খেলার উপকরণ কিংবা মজা করার জন্য রণপা ব্যবহার করা হয়, তা নয়। শত শত বছর ধরে জলা এলাকায় বাস করা লোকদের দারুণ উপকার করে আসছে রণপা। দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম ফ্রান্সের কথাই ধরো না। সেখানে মেষপালকরা রণপা ব্যবহার করা শুরু করে সহজে খাল আর জলা জায়গা পেরোনোর জন্য। হাঁটুর নিচে রণপার সঙ্গে নিজেদের পা জোড়া বেঁধে রাখে তারা। কারণ হাতজোড়া খালি থাকলে ভারসাম্য রক্ষার জন্য যে লাঠিটি ব্যবহার করে সেটা বহন করতে কোনো সমস্যা হয় না। কোথাও বিশ্রাম নেওয়ার প্রয়োজন হলে লাঠিটি মাটিতে ভর দিয়ে তিন পায়ের একটা প্ল্যাটফর্ম তৈরি করে নিতে পারত সহজেই। পুরনো একটি কাহিনীতে ১৬০০ সালে বেলজিয়ামের মজার একটি ঘটনার কথা বলা হয়েছে। সেখানকার নেমার প্রদেশের গভর্নরকে আর্চডিউক তাঁর সেনাদলের জন্য একদল লোক পাঠানোর নির্দেশ দেন। গভর্নর প্রতিজ্ঞা করেন তিনি এমন কিছু সৈনিক পাঠাবেন, যারা হেঁটেও আসবে না ঘোড়ায় চড়েও আসবে না। আর্চডিউক অবাক হয়ে ভাবলেন এটা কী করে সম্ভব। কিন্তু যখন সৈনিকদের রণপা পরে হেঁটে আসতে দেখলেন ভারি আনন্দ পেলেন। নেমারের নির্দিষ্ট কিছু কর মওকুফ করে দেন তিনি। যখনকার ঘটনা তখন নেমারের ভেতর দিয়ে বয়ে চলা নদী দুটোয় বন্যা হতো নিয়মিত, আর তাই ওখানের ছেলে-বুড়ো সবাই ছিল রণপা পরায় ওস্তাদ। পৃথিবীর দেশে দেশে এখন নানা কাজে রণপা ব্যবহার করা হয়। দেয়ালে ইট গাঁথা কিংবা রং করার সময় এটা ব্যবহার করে নির্মাণ শ্রমিকরা। তাদের রণপাগুলো সাধারণত শক্ত কোনো ধাতুর তৈরি। শ্রমিকদের দাঁড়িয়ে থাকার সুবিধার জন্য রণপার নিচের ভিত্তিও থাকে চওড়া। হাঁটুর নিচে দুই থেকে তিন জায়গায় ফিতা দিয়ে রণপার সঙ্গে নিজেদের পা-জোড়া আটকে রাখে তারা। এদিকে মই ব্যবহার না করে রণপা পরায় অনেক সময় বেঁচে যায় তারা। আমেরিকার ক্যালিফোর্নিয়াসহ অনেক জায়গায়ই গাছ থেকে ফল পাড়ার সময়ও রণপা ব্যবহার করে লোকেরা। এখনকার রণপাগুলো বেশির ভাগই ধাতুর তৈরি আর এগুলো ব্যবহারের সুবিধার জন্য নানা কারিগরি ফলানো হয়। কিন্তু আগের জমানায় লম্বা লাঠির সঙ্গে কাঠ পেরেক মেরেই তৈরি হয়ে যেত রণপা। এগুলো ব্যবহার করা খুব মুশকিল। কারণ পাদানির নিচে বাতাস ছাড়া নিয়ন্ত্রণের জন্য আর কিছু নেই। রণপায়ে হেঁটে চলা লোকটির ওজনে লাঠিগুলো বেঁকে যেত বারবার। রণপা তৈরির একটি ভালো উপায় হলো মাটি স্পর্শ করে এমন একটি লম্বা কাঠের টুকরোর ওপর পাদানি বানানো। এটা হাঁটতে থাকা লোকটির ওজন বইবে। ওপরে উঠে যাওয়া হাতলটা পাদানির সঙ্গে স্ক্রু দিয়ে লাগানো থাকে। এটা হালকা কাঠের হওয়াই ভালো। ফলে কোনো কারণে হোঁচট খেলেও রণপায়ে হাঁটা লোকটি আঘাত পাবেন না। এখন রণপা পরে হেঁটে বেড়ানো লোক দেখবে না এ দেশে খুব একটা। তবে সার্কাস দলে কখনো কখনো দেখা যায়। আবার ঢাকার রাস্তায় হঠাৎ দু-একজন এমন লোকের দেখা পেয়ে যেতে পারো। বছর কয়েক আগে গুলিস্তানে রণপা পরা এক লোককে দেখেছিলাম। আগে যোগাযোগব্যবস্থা যখন তত একটা ভালো ছিল না তখন এই ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশেই ডাকাতরা দুর্গম আর লম্বা রাস্তা পেরোত রণপা পরে। রণপা নিয়ে আছে ভারি মজার মজার সব রেকর্ড। ১৮৯১ সালে সিলভেইন ডরনন নামের এক লোক ফ্রান্স থেকে রাশিয়া গিয়েছিলেন। ২০০০ মাইল দূরত্বের পুরোটাই তিনি পেরিয়েছিলেন রণপায়। অবিশ্বাস্য না! একবারে সবচেয়ে বেশি মানুষ রণপা পরে হাঁটার রেকর্ড আমেরিকার একটি শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের শিক্ষার্থীদের। একসঙ্গে ৬২৫ জন শিক্ষার্থী রণপা পরে হেঁটে পেরোয় ৩৩০ ফুট দূরত্ব, ২০০৮ সালে। আর সবচেয়ে উঁচু রণপা পরেন অস্ট্রেলিয়ার রয় মেলয়। ওটার উচ্চতা ছিল ৫৬ ফুট। ২০০৮ সালের লন্ডন ম্যারাথনে মিশেলে ফ্রস্টের কেরামতিটাক খাটো করে দেখতে পারবে না। রণপা দিয়ে আট ঘণ্টা ২৫ মিনিটে অতিক্রম করেন তিনি ২৬.২ মাইল দূরত্ব।

told me there was nothing they can do until after midnight.
They impose these limits but when they are not
justified you are stuck with being stuck. Since I didn’t have a backup credit
card on hand, I was stranded at the airport. This is NOT good for any business.
I suggest everyone stay away and use another bank!
This one sucks for business banking. Personal accounts are ok
but business banking stinks like no other!
