বুম্ বুম্ বুম! গোলা এসে আছড়ে পড়ল হতভাগা জাহাজটার কিনারে। ভয়ে জাহাজ থামাতে বাধ্য হলো নাবিকরা। জলদস্যু জাহাজের দীর্ঘদেহী সর্দারকে দেখে পিলে চমকে যাওয়ার জোগাড়। কালো জটপাকানো চুল, দাড়ির কিনারা থেকে ধোঁয়া বের হচ্ছে। ভাটার মতো জ্বলছে চোখজোড়া। শরীরের সঙ্গে স্ট্র্যাপ দিয়ে আটকানো পিস্তল। সাগরের আতঙ্ক ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড। ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের হাত থেকে বেঁচে ফেরা নাবিকরা জানায়, লুটতরাজের সময় মাথার টুপিটার নিচে জ্বলন্ত দড়ির টুকরো রেখে দিত ভয়ানক এই দস্যু। মৃদু জ্বলতে থাকা ওই দড়ি থেকে ধোঁয়া বের হতো। তার লম্বা দাড়িগুলো ছিল কালো ফিতা দিয়ে বাঁধা। কুণ্ডলী পাকিয়ে বুক পর্যন্ত নেমে আসত ওগুলো। সব কিছু মিলিয়ে চেহারা এতই ভয়ংকর দেখাত যে পৃথিবীর কেউ বলে মনে হতো না। তাকে দেখে কোনো কোনো নাবিক বিশ্বাস পর্যন্ত করত সে মানুষ নয়, শয়তান। তার ভয়ংকরত্বের নানা কাহিনি ছড়িয়ে পড়ে জল পেরিয়ে ডাঙায়ও।

আরো অনেক জলদস্যুর মতো ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের জন্ম-পরিচয়ও রহস্যে ঢাকা। কেউ বলে ১৬৮০ সালের দিকে ইংল্যান্ডের ব্রিস্টল বন্দরের আশপাশে তার জন্ম। কেউ আবার বলে তার জন্ম জ্যামাইকায়। তার আসল নাম ছিল এডওয়ার্ড টিচ। সত্যিকারের নামকে আড়াল করার জন্য জলদস্যুরা নানা ধরনের নাম ব্যবহার করত। তবে এডওয়ার্ড ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড নামে পরিচিতি পেয়ে যায় তার লম্বা কালো দাড়ির জন্য।
জলদস্যু হলো কেন
বড় কারণ অবশ্যই বড়লোক হওয়া। সাগরের জাহাজে লুটতরাজ চালিয়ে জলদস্যুরা প্রচুর অর্থ-সম্পদের মালিক হয়ে যেত সে সময়। আবার কখনো কখনো কোনো দেশের সরকারও জাহাজের ক্যাপ্টেনদের অন্য দেশের জাহাজ লুটে উৎসাহ দিত। এ ধরনের লুটেরাদের বলা হতো প্রাইভেটিয়ার। অনেক প্রাইভেটিয়ারই একপর্যায়ে পুরোদস্তুর জলদস্যু বনে গিয়েছিল। ধারণা করা ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডও এভাবেই জলদস্যু হয়। সে এতটাই কুখ্যাতি অর্জন করে যে তার জাহাজ দেখলেই সাধারণ জাহাজের ক্যাপ্টেনরা ভয়ে আত্মসমর্পণ করে ফেলত। অন্য জলদস্যুদের মতোই বাণিজ্য জাহাজের প্রতিই আগ্রহ বেশি ছিল ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের। ক্যারিবীয় অঞ্চলে ত্রাসের রাজত্ব কায়েম করেছিল সে। কোকো, ময়দা, সোনার টুকরা, মূল্যবান কাপড়সহ নানা ধরনের সামগ্রী লুট করে বিক্রি করে দিত ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড।
জাহাজ আর পতাকা
কুখ্যাত অন্য জলদস্যুদের মতো ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের নিজস্ব পতাকা ছিল। সবচেয়ে বিখ্যাত মতটা হলো, তার কালো পতাকাটায় আঁকা ছিল সাদা শয়তানের কঙ্কাল। লাল হৃৎপিণ্ডের দিকে একটা তীর তাক করে রেখেছিল কঙ্কালটা। তবে ইদানীং অনেক বিশেষজ্ঞ বলেছেন তার পতাকা কালো ছিল এটা হয়তো ঠিক, কিন্তু ওটার ওই তীর তাক করে থাকা কঙ্কালের বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত নয়। কুইন অ্যান’স রিভেঞ্জ নামে জাকালো এক জাহাজ ছিল তার। বলা হতো ওটায় ছিল ৪০টি কামান। তাই সে সময়ের সবচেয়ে ভয়ংকর জলদস্যু জাহাজ হিসেবে কুখ্যাতি অর্জন করে ওটা।

জলদস্যুর গুপ্তধনের অনেক গল্প-গুজব চালু থাকলেও বিখ্যাত জলদস্যুদের মধ্যে শুধু উইলিয়াম কিডের এমন লুকানো সম্পদের নিশ্চিত প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়। নিউ ইয়র্কের গার্ডেনার দ্বীপে মাটির নিচে এখনকার হিসাবে প্রায় ১০ কোটি টাকার সম্পদ লুকিয়ে রেখেছিল সে। ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডের গুপ্তধন নিয়েও নানা ধরনের গুজব ডালপালা মেলে। তবে যদ্দূর জানা যায় সে এমন কোনো ধন-সম্পদ লুকিয়ে রেখে যায়নি কোথাও।

কুখ্যাত এই জলসদ্যুকে ধরতে পুরস্কার ঘোষণা করা হয় অনেকবারই। তাকে ধরার চেষ্টাও করা হয়েছে সেই অর্থের লোভে। তবে বারবার ফাঁক গলে ঠিকই পালিয়ে গেছে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড। বাধ্য হয়ে তাকে রোখার জন্য একটি প্রস্তাব দেওয়া হয়। তা হলো তাকে ক্ষমা করে দেওয়া হবে, তবে ভবিষ্যতে আর লুটতরাজ করতে পারবে না। বাধ্য ছেলের মতো রাজি হয় সে। তবে পরে আবার জলদস্যু হয়ে যায়। তারপর আসে ১৭১৮ সালের ২২ নভেম্বর। আমেরিকার উত্তর ক্যারোলাইনার ওকরাকক দ্বীপের কাছে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ডকে কোণঠাসা করে ফেলে পাইরেট হান্টাররা। যারা জলদস্যুদের জন্য ঘোষণা করা পুরস্কারের অর্থ পাওয়ার জন্য তাদের ধরত বা মারত তারাই পরিচিত ছিল পাইরেট হান্টার নামে। দারুণ যুদ্ধ করে মারা পড়ে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড। সে যে সত্যি মারা গিয়েছে এর প্রমাণ হিসেবে তার মাথা কেটে সঙ্গে নিয়ে যায় জলদস্যু শিকারিরা। পুরনো এক গল্পে বলা হয়, তার মস্তকহীন শরীর তিনবার জাহাজের চারপাশে সাঁতরে বেড়ায়। যদিও এটা আসলে গল্পই। এর মাধ্যমে ব্ল্যাকবিয়ার্ড কতটা প্রভাব বিস্তার করেছিল মানুষের মনে তা উঠে আসে। আর এর মাধ্যমে সমাপ্তি হয় সাগরের ভয়ংকর এক অধ্যায়ের।
