রাতটা কাটিয়েছিলাম মৌলভীবাজারের পুটিছড়ার টিলার ওপর নিঃসঙ্গ বন বাংলোয়। অদ্ভুত একটা গা শির শির করে দেওয়া ডাক এগুতে এগুতে এসে থেমে গিয়েছিল ছোট্ট বাংলোটার জানালার নিচে। স্থানীয় অধিবাসীরা এর আগে সন্ধ্যায় শুনিয়েছিল নব্বইয়ের দশকেও মশাল দিয়ে চিতা বাঘ তাড়ানোর কাহিনি। পরদিন ভোরের কুয়াশা গায়ে মেখে ক্লিভডন ও পরিত্যক্ত রত্না চা বাগান পেরিয়ে আরো অনেকটা পথ পাড়ি দিয়ে তবেই পৌঁছাই ফুলতলা চা বাগান এবং রাগনার জঙ্গলে। ওখানেই দেখা পাই আশি পেরোনো এক বৃদ্ধের। গল্পের ঝুড়ি মেলে দিলেন স্মৃতিকাতরা পেয়ে বসা বুড়ো। যুবা বয়সে তার গরুর পালে বিশাল এক বাঘের আক্রমণের রোমহর্ষক বিবরন শুনলাম মুগ্ধ হয়ে। মনে হচ্ছিল তার সঙ্গে আমিও হাজির হয়ে গিয়েছি সেখানে। বাধা পেয়ে ক্রুদ্ধ বাঘটা পালের চার-পাঁচটা গরুকে মেরে রেখে যায়। ভাগ্যগুণে বেঁচে যান গল্প বয়ানকারী। হবিগঞ্জের দেবনগরে নানির মুখে শুনা রাতে গরুর খোঁয়ারে হামলা চালানো বাঘের কাহিনি কিংবা ওখানে লোকমুখে ছড়িয়ে থাকা বাঘকে খালি হাতে হারিয়ে দেওয়া দুই ভাইয়ের গল্পও দাগ কেটেছে মনে। কিংবা এক নানার মুখে শুনা সিলেটে জাল দিয়ে বাঘ শিকারের কাহিনি। তবে এসবই ষাট থেকে আশি বছর আগের ঘটনা।একসময় বাংলাদেশের একটা বড় অংশজুড়ে বাঘের বিচরণ থাকলেও এখন অফিসিয়ালি বাঘ আছে কেবল সুন্দরবনে। কিন্তু আসলেই কি তাই? সুন্দরবনের বাইরে একটা বাঘও আর বেঁচে নেই? পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম কিংবা সিলেটের অরণ্যে বাঘ থাকার সম্ভাবনা রহস্যে ঢাকা বলেই আমার টানটা বরাবরই ওখানকার অদেখা, বাস্তব উপস্থিতির গ্যারান্টি নেই এমন বাঘেদের জন্যই বেশি। ভাবি ওখানের কোনো একটা বনে যদি বাঘের দেখা পেয়ে যেতাম! দিবা স্বপ্নও বলতে পারেন।কালো চিতা খুবই কালেভদ্রে দেখা গেলেও কালো বাঘ আরো অনেক বেশি দুষ্প্রাপ্য । এরও রেকর্ড আছে বাংলাদেশেই। ১৮৪৬ সালে চট্টগ্রামের পাহাড়ে (পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামও বুঝাতে পারেন তিনি) এমনই কালো বাঘ দেখা যাওয়ার কথা বলেছিলেন এক প্রকৃতিবিদ। পরে ওটাকে বিষ মাখানো তীর দিয়ে মারে স্থানীয় অধিবাসীরা। এনায়েত মাওলার যখন শিকারি ছিলাম, আবদুর রহমান চৌধুরীর জানোয়ারের খাসমহল, মানিগার নরখাদক, এরশাদ উল্লা খানের চট্টগ্রামের শিকার কাহিনী, ইউসুফ এস আহমদের ওইথ দ্য ওয়াইল্ড অ্যানিমেলস অব বেঙ্গলসহ আরো অনেকের বইয়েই পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম, চট্টগ্রাম ও বৃহত্তর সিলেটের অনেক অরণ্যেই বাঘের ঘাঁটি এবং বাঘ শিকারের বর্ণনা পাওয়া যায়। আলোকচিত্রী এবং উদ্ভিদবিজ্ঞানী নওয়াজেশ আহমদও বাঘ দেখেছিলেন লাউয়াছড়ার বনে। এর কাছাকাছি সময়ে ওই বনে একটা বাঘ শিকারও করেন এক সামরিক কর্মকর্তা। তবে এসব ঘটনাও নিদেন পক্ষে বছর ষাটেক আগের। তাহলে এখনকার কী অবস্থা?
এর খোঁজেই হবিগঞ্জ, মৌলভীবাজার, সিলেট, রাঙ্গামাটি, বান্দরবান বা খাগড়াছড়ির যে বন কিংবা পাহাড়েই গিয়েছি খোঁজ নেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছি বাঘের। অবিশ্বাস্য শুনালেও কাপ্তাইয়ের কোনো কোনো কাঠুরে সাম্প্রতিক সময়েও জঙ্গলে রহস্যময় লতা বাঘের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে শোনায় বড় বাঘ দেখার গল্পও। লতা বাঘ মানে মেঘলা বাঘ বা ক্লাউড্যাড ল্যাপার্ড যে সেখানে আছে মৃদুল (মনিরুল খান) ভাইদের ক্যামেরা ট্র্যাপে তার প্রমাণও মিলেছে। আবার কাপ্তাই পেরিয়ে আরো গহীনে রাংখিয়াং রিজার্ভে যখন লোকেদের এখনো কালেভদ্রে বাঘ দেখার দাবির কথা শুনি মাহফুজ মামার মুখে তখন অজান্তেই হ্নৎস্পন্দন বেড়ে যায় উত্তেজনায়। যদিও খুব আশাবাদী মানুষ হওয়ার পরও কাপ্তাইয়ে বাঘের ব্যাপারটা আমারও ঠিক হজম হয় নি। তবে কাপ্তাইয়ে শেষ বাঘ শিকার করা মারমা শিকারির বাঘের সঙ্গে ছবি সংগ্রহ করে দিয়েছিলাম ওই শিকারির ছেলে টিটু মারমাকে। সম্ভবত ১৯৬২ সালে ওই বাঘটা মারা পড়ে!এবার চলুন হবিগঞ্জের চুনারুঘাটের কালেঙ্গার জঙ্গলে। ওখানে অনেকের সঙ্গে আলাপ করে মোটামুটি নিশ্চিত হই, মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পর আর সেখানে বাঘ দেখা যায় নি। আশপাশে বসতি গাড়া লোকেদের অনুমান ওই সময় কালেঙ্গার জঙ্গলে যে যুদ্ধ হয় এর গোলাবারুদের শব্দে ভয় পেয়ে বাঘগুলো সীমান্তের ওপাশে ভারতের পাহাড়রাজ্যে হারিয়ে যায়, আর ফেরেনি। তবে কালেঙ্গায় এখনো চিতা বাঘের খবর মেলে হরহামেশাই। সত্যি বলতে সিলেট বিভাগের কোথাও এখন আর বাঘ নেইও, তবে একটা কিন্তু আছে। আর ওটা লাঠিটিলা। মৌলভীবাজারের জুড়ির ভারতীয় সীমান্তবর্তী এক অরণ্য লাঠিটিলা। দু-বার যাওয়ার সুযোগ হয়েছে সেখানে। লাঠিটিলায় চিতা বাঘ যে নিয়মিতই আস্তানা গাড়ে তাতে সন্দেহ নেই। এমনকী বেশ কয়েক বছর আগে গ্রামবাসীরা বিষটোপ দিয়ে একটা চিতা বাঘ মারে এমন খবরও শুনেছিলাম। দ্বিতীয়বার লাঠিটিলা ভ্রমণের সময় হঠাৎই জঙ্গলের গভীরে দেখা হয়ে গিয়েছিল শক্তপোক্ত গড়নের মাঝারি উচ্চতার এক লোকের সঙ্গে। আমার সঙ্গে থাকা একটা স্থানীয় ছেলে তখন বলেছিল এই লোক দুর্দান্ত শিকারি। সম্বর, মায়া হরিণ শিকারে সিদ্ধহস্ত। শুরুতে গাইগুই করলেও পরে কথা বলতে রাজি হলো। একপর্যায়ে জানাল লাঠিটিলার জঙ্গলে বড় বাঘ দেখার গল্প। বিশ্বাস অবিশ্বাস কোনোটাই করতে পারিনি। তবে পরে যখন জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রাণীবিদ্যার অধ্যাপক মনিরুল ভাইও লাঠিটিলায় বাঘের দেখা মেলার ঘটনা শুনেন অন্য একজন স্থানীয় শিকারির মুখে তখন আশাবাদী হয়ে উঠে মন। এখন একটু হিসাব-নিকাশ করা যাক লাঠিটিলায় আসলেই বাঘ থাকার কোনো সুযোগ আছে কিনা? লাঠিটিলা পড়েছে পাথারিয়া হিল রিজার্ভের মধ্যে। যার বড় একটা অংশ ভারতের করিমগঞ্জে। নেট ঘাঁটাঘাঁটি করে যা দেখলাম ভারতের পাথারিয়া অংশে বন্য হাতির পাল বিচরণের কথা বললেও বাঘ সেখান থেকে হারিয়ে গিয়েছ বলে মত গবেষকদেরও। আমার জানা মতে সিলেটের একমাত্র লাঠিটিলাতেই এখনও কখনো-সখনো হাতি দেখা যায়। তবে ওগুলো বেশিরভাগ সময় থাকে ভারতীয় জঙ্গলেই। তবে লাঠিটিলার সঙ্গে কিন্তু ওই দিকে পাথারিয়া পাহাড়ের আরো ছোট ছোট বনের কানেকশন আছে। যদ্দুর জানি লাঠিটিলা ধরে ধরে পৌঁছে যাওয়া যায় একেবারে মাধবকুন্ড জলপ্রপাত লগোয়া জঙ্গলেও। এখন মোটের ওপর এই এলাকাটা কিন্তু দুই-চারটা হলেও বাঘের জায়গা দেওয়ার মতো পরিবেশ ও খাবার এখনো আছে। লোকমুখে ছড়িয়ে পড়া গুজবের সত্যতা থাকা কি একেবারে অসম্ভব? এ ধরনের বনচর মানুষেরা চিতা বাঘের সঙ্গে বাঘকে গুলিয়ে ফেলবে এটাও মনে হয় না।এবার আসা যাক পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামে বাঘের সম্ভাবনার ব্যাপারে। শুরুটা করি সাজেক দিয়ে। সাজেকে যখন প্রথমবার গিয়েছিলাম, সম্ভবত সেটা ২০১১, মিজোরামে বাস করা এক কারবারির মেয়ে জামাইয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা। তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম এদিকে বাঘ আছে? তখন সে ভাঙা ভাঙা বাংলায় এবং ইশারায় বুঝাল এদিকে চোখে পড়ে না, তবে ওই দূরের পাহাড়ে মিজোরামে মস্ত বড় বাঘ আছে। বছর তিনেক আগে যখন সাজেক যাই তখনো অনেকের সঙ্গে কথা হয়। বাঘাইহাটের এক বৃদ্ধ আশির দশকে বন-পাহাড়ে বাঘ-হাতি ঘুরে বেড়াবার অনেক গল্পই বলেন। তবে এখন সাজেকের অরণ্য-পাহাড়ে বাঘের বিচরণ আছে কিনা সে ব্যাপারে কিছু জানাতে ব্যর্থ হোন। কেবল ভাসা ভাসাভাসা ভাবে বলেন মিজোরামের সীমান্তে থাকা অসম্ভব নয়। তবে এর আগেই একদিন গোগল আর্থে তল্লাশি চালাতে গিয়ে খোঁজ পেয়ে যাই মিজোরামের একমাত্র টাইগার রিজার্ভ ডামপার। আরে কী আশ্চর্য এটা একেবারে সাজেকের সীমানায়ই। আরো ভালোভাবে খোঁজ নিতেই দেখলাম ডামপার যেখানে শেষ সেখানে সাজেকের শুরু। অর্থাৎ ভারতের সীমান্ত শেষ হয়ে যাওয়ার কারণেই এখানে ডামপা শেষ। তার মানে মোটামুটি একই পরিবেশ, অরণ্য ডামপার ওপাশে সাজেকের অন্তত বেশ কতকটা জায়গায় থাকার কথা। তাহলে ডামপায় বাঘ থাকলে সাজেকে থাকবে না কেন? তবে এখানে একটা সমস্যা আবিষ্কার করলাম পরে। ২০১৪ সালের জরিপে এখানে ক্যামেরা ট্র্যাপে সরাসরি কোনো বাঘের ছবি মেলেনি। তবে স্ক্যাট স্যাম্পল (মল, পস্রাব) স্টাডি করে ধারণা করা হয় ওখানে তখনো তিনটি বাঘ আছে। কিন্তু ২০১৮ সালের জরিপ বলছে ডামপায় বাঘ আছে এমন কোনো প্রমাণই মেলেনি। এটা শাপে বরও হতে পারে আমাদের জন্য। কে জানে ওই বাঘগুলো চোরা শিকারিদের হাতে মারা পড়েছে কিনা! আবার এমনও তো হতে পারে ওরা ডামপার এই পাশে বাংলাদেশে ঘাঁটি গেড়েছে, তা ছাড়া বাংলাদেশ অংশে আগে থেকেও বাঘ থেকে থাকতে পারে। এখানে তো কোনো জরিপই হয়নি। তা ছাড়া সাজেকের অধিবাসীরা এখনো কিন্তু ওখানে কালেভদ্রে হলেও বাঘ দেখার কথা বলেন! কাজেই সাজেকে বাঘ থাকার ব্যাপারে আশাবাদী হতেই পারি আমরা। ও আরেকটা কথার ডামপায় কিন্তু প্রচুর মেঘলা চিতা ও বন্য কুকুর আছে। সে সুবাদে এটা নিশ্চিত সাজেকের পাহাড়েও ওগুলো আছে।এবার কাসালং রিজর্ভে। পাবলাখালীর গহীনে বাঘের দেখা মিলতে পারে এই আশায় ২০১১ সালেই হাজির হয়েছিলাম সেখানে। সাজেক থেকে বাঘাইছড়ি। সেখান থেকে ভাড়ায় মোটর বাইকে পাবলাখালী। আগেই শুনেছিলাম পাবলাখালীর ভেতরে ঢুকা প্রায় অসাধ্য। তবে আশায় বুক বেধে আসা। কিন্তু রেঞ্জারের সঙ্গে কথা বলে আশপাশটা টুকটাক দেখেই বিদায় নিতে হয়। কারণ ভেতরে নিরাপত্তা দেওয়ার ব্যবস্থা করা বন বিভাগের পক্ষেও সম্ভব নয়। অবশ্য বন বিভাগের সাহায্যেই সেবার মাইনি থেকে রাঙ্গীপারা গিয়ে বাচ্চাসহ হাতির পাল দেখার সৌভাগ্য হয়। এমনকী সন্তানের অমঙ্গল চিন্তায় অস্থির মা হাতির তাড়া খাওয়ার অভিজ্ঞতাও হয়ে যায় সেবার। কাসালংয়ের প্রতি আগ্রহের জন্ম এনায়েত মাওলার বই পড়ে। কাপ্তাই বাঁধ তৈরির সময় মাইনি, মাহিল্লা এলাকায় বেশ কয়েকটা বাঘ শিকারের কাহিনি উঠে আসে বইটিতে। মাইনিতে অবশ্য বনের ছিটেফোটাও এখন নেই। তবে কাসালংয়ের গহীনে আজও নাকি বাঘ দেখার সংবাদ মেলে হঠাৎ হঠাৎ। দুর্গমতার পাশাপাশি আরো নানা জটিলতার কারণে এই এলাকাগুলোতে বনকর্মীরাও সে অর্থে ঢুকতে পারেন না বলে শুনেছিলাম। কাসালংয়ের সঙ্গে সীমান্ত আছে ত্রিপুরা আর মিজোরামের। ওই দুটো রাজ্যেও এখন সে অর্থে বাঘ নেই। তাহলে যদি এখানে বাঘ থেকেই থাকে তবে আমাদের স্থায়ী বাঘও হতে পারে।তবে বাঘ অবস্থানের সম্ভাবনার বিচারে সবচেয়ে এগিয়ে সাঙ্গু-মাতামুহুরি রিজার্ভ। বান্দবানের থানচি ও আলীকদমের মিয়ানমার সীমানার এই বনটির বেশ কিছু অংশ এখনো মোটামুটি ভালো অবস্থায় আছে। বড় মোদকের পড়ে লিকরি পর্যন্ত যাওয়ার পথে বাঘের হদিস মিলতে পারে শুনে কয়েকজন সঙ্গী-সাথি নিয়ে বেরিয়েও ছিলাম। যদি বড় মোদকের পরে আর যাওয়া সম্ভব হয় নি। তবে তখন কিংবা এরপরে যখনই গিয়েছি বাঘের খোঁজ নেওয়ারর চেষ্টা করেছি। আমাদের মারমা গাইড যেমন তিন্দুর পরে রেমাক্রির কাছাকছি বহু বছর আগে অল্পের জন্য বাঘের কবল থেকে বেঁচে ফেরার রোমাঞ্চকর অভিজ্ঞতা বর্ণনা করেছিল। বান্দরবানের অনেক স্থানীয় অধিবাসীই বলেছে মিয়ানমারের সীমান্তবর্তী সাঙ্গু-মাতামুহুরি রিজার্ভে বাঘ এখনো ঘুরে বেড়ানোর কথা। বেশ কিছু প্রমাণও মিলেছে নানা সময়। ক্যামেরা ট্র্যাপে বাঘের পায়ের ছাপ, মিয়ানমার থেকে আসা কিংবা স্থানীয় শিকারিদের শিকার করা বাঘের লিভার কিংবা দাঁতের খোঁজ মেলা ইত্যাদি। তা ছাড়া সাঙ্গু-মাতামুহুরির ওই পাশে মিয়ানমারের জঙ্গলেরও বাঘের জরিপ নেই যদ্দুর জানি। সে হিসাবে এদিকটায় বাংলাদেশ-মিয়ানমার মিলিয়ে বাঘেদের একটা বসতি থাকতেই পারে!দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে যেসব জায়গার ফিরিস্তি দিলাম সেসব অরণ্যে বাঘ এখনো আছে এমন দিব্বি দেওয়া সম্ভব নয়। কিন্তু ওখানে বাঘের অবস্থা জানতে জরিপ কিংবা গবেষনা জরুরি এই বিষয়ে সন্দেহ নেই। ভারত মিজোরামের শুধু ডামপাতেই কত্তো ক্যামেরা ট্র্যাপ বসিয়েছে। ঠিকমতো বিজ্ঞান সম্মত জরিপে যদি এমন কোনো অরণ্যে বাঘের অস্তিত্ত নিশ্চিত হওয়া যায় তাহলে তো আমরা বুক ফুলিয়ে বলতে পারব সুন্দরবন ছাড়াও পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামে কিংবা সিলেটে বাঘ আছে! তা ছাড়া বারো বছরে (২০০৬-১৮) বাঘের সংখ্যা দ্বিগুণের বেশি হয়েছে ভারতে, নেপালও দশ বছরের মধ্যে বাঘের সংখ্যা প্রায় দ্বিগুণ করেছে। এদিকে বাংলাদেশে আট বছরে (২০১০-১৮) বাঘের সংখ্যা বেড়েছে কেবল আটটি। পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের এই জায়গাগুলোতে বাঘের অবস্থান সম্পর্কে তথ্য মিললে বাঘ সংরক্ষণেও আনা যাবে নতুন মাত্রা। আর যদি প্রমাণ হয় এখানে কালভেদ্রে বাঘ আসলেও ওগুলো মিয়ানমার বা ভারতের থেকে আসে তাহলেও কিন্তু এই জঙ্গলগুওলায় আবার ফিরিয়ে আনা সম্ভব বাঘেদের। ভারতের কথাই ধরুন। ওখানে ডামপা, বুক্সা, পালামৌ এসব জায়গায় শেষ জরিপে কোনো বাঘের হদিস মেলেনি। এখন এসব অরণ্যে আবারও অন্য বন থেকে বাঘ এনে বংশবৃদ্ধির কথা ভাবা হচ্ছে। যেমন ডামপায় বাঘ আনার কথা চিন্তা করা হচ্ছে কাজিরাঙ্গা থেকে। কারণ ডামপার আর কাজিরাঙ্গার বাঘের জীনগত বৈশিষ্ট্য কাছাকাছি বলে ধরে নেওয়া হচ্ছে, কারণ এগুলো সম্ভবত অতীতে দক্ষিণ পূর্ব এশিয়া হয়ে ভারতে ঢুকেছে। তেমনি সাঙ্গু-মাতামুহুরি কিংবা কাসালংয়ে মিয়ানমার থেকে এবং লাঠিটিলায় আসামের বনাঞ্চল থেকে বাঘ এনে ছাড়াও হয়তো অসম্ভব নয়। অবশ্য এর জন্যও অনেক গবেষনা আর পরিকল্পনার ব্যাপার আছে। তা ছাড়া আমি মোটেই কোনো বাঘ বিশেষজ্ঞ নই, বরং এক বাঘপ্রেমী হিসাবেই এই বিশাল রচনা লিখতে বসা। আর এই লেখার মূল উদ্দেশ্য নিজের মনের খোরাক মেটানো, কারো বিরক্তি উৎপাদন নয়। ২৯ জুলাই বিশ্ব বাঘ দিবস। পৃথিবীর বাঘরা ভালো থাকুক, ভালো থাকুক সাঙ্গু-মাতামুহুরি, কাসালং-সাজেক কিংবা লাঠিটিলার অদেখা হয়তো অস্তিত্ত্বহীন নতুবা অস্তিত্ত্ব সঙ্কটে থাকা বাঘেরা। সব বাঘপ্রেমীকেও শুভেচ্ছা।ছবি ইন্টারনেট থেকে সংগ্রহ
