১৯৫৩ সালে প্রকাশিত হয় রেনে জুইয়র বিখ্যাত বই সিরগা, এক সিংহী ও আফ্রিকান এক গোত্রপতির ছেলের বন্ধুত্বের কাহিনি এটি। সিরগা ও ভ্যালেন্টিনের ঘটনাটাও অনেকটা এমনই, তবে পার্থক্য রেনে জুইয়র কাহিনিটি কাল্পনিক, আর এটা বাস্তব।
ফেব্রুয়ারি, ২০১২। আফ্রিকার দেশ বতসোয়ানার কালাহারি মরুভূমির পাশেই গড়ে ওঠা এক খামারের কাছে ছোট্ট এক সিংহ শাবককে পাওয়া যায়। ওটার তখন মুমূর্ষু অবস্থা। অবশ্য বাচ্চাটাকে পুরোপুরি বুনো এলাকায় পাওয়া গিয়েছে এটা বলা যাবে না। খামার এবং বন্যপ্রাণী বিচরণ এলাকার মাঝখানে, খামারি উইলি ডি গ্রাফ একটি ঘেরে গবাদি পশু হামলাকারী মাংসাশি জন্তুদের আশ্রয়ের ব্যবস্থা করেছিলেন। ওখানেই এক সিংহীর তিনটি বাচ্চা জন্ম নেওয়ার পর অন্য সিংহের আক্রমণে দুটি মারা যায়। সিংহী তিন নম্বরটির খোঁজ-খবরই নেয় নি কোনো।
বতসোয়ানায় তখন পশুপাখির চিকিৎসক হিসেবে কাজ করতেন ভ্যালেন্টিন গ্রুয়েনার। বিষয়টি যখন তাঁর নজরে আসে, তখন মাত্র ১০ দিন বয়সী বাচ্চাটি বলা চলে, জীবন-মৃত্যুর সন্ধিক্ষণে। ওজন টেনেটুনে চার পাউন্ড। পানির অভাব শরীরে। সে অবস্থায় শাবকটিকে কালাহারির ওই খামারের এলাকার মধ্যেই সদ্য প্রতিষ্ঠা করা মোদিসা ওয়াইল্ড লাইফ পার্কে নিয়ে এলেন ভ্যালেন্টিন। এই পার্কের সহ প্রতিষ্ঠাতা তিনি।
বাচ্চাটাকে আনা তো হলো, এখন এর একটা নাম রাখা দরকার, সেটা ঠিক করা হলো সিরগা। সম্ভবত ভ্যালেন্টিন রেনে জুইয়র সিংহী সিরগা থেকেই এই শাবকের নাম রাখেন।
পরম যত্নে শাবকটিকে ধীরে ধীরে সুস্থ করে তুলতে থাকেন ভ্যালেন্টিনের নেতৃত্বে পার্কের কর্মচারী-কর্মকর্তারা। সবচেয়ে বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ ছিল অপুষ্ট শরীরটাকে তরতাজা করে তোলা। ভ্যালেন্টিন নিজের রেসিপি দিয়ে খাবার বানিয়ে নিতেন। ডিম, দুধ, ভিটামিন, সূর্যমুখী তেল আর ক্যালসিয়াম মিশিয়ে তৈরি দাওয়াইটা কাজ দেখায় । ধীরে ধীরে চেহারা ফিরে আসে। এক বছরের মধ্যে সিরগার ওজন দাঁড়ায় ১৭৫ পাউন্ড। ভ্যালেন্টিন নিজেই তখন হেসে বলেছিলেন, এভাবে দুধ-মাখন খাইয়ে আদর-যত্নে ‘সিংহ করা’ সিংহ বতসোয়ানায় আর নেই।”
সিরগার যখন বুঝার ক্ষমতা হয় নি তখনই তার সিংহ পরিবারকে হারিয়েছে। কাজেই ভ্যালিন্টিন এবং পার্কের সবাই তার কাছে পরিবার হয়ে ওঠে। সিরগা এটাও জানে এরাই তাকে রক্ষা করেছে, সুস্থ করে তুলেছে। সিংহী মা তাকে ফেলে যাওয়ার পর ভালোবাসা দিয়ে বড় করে তুলেছে। ১৬ মাস বয়সে যখন প্রথম শিকার করে তখন তো ভ্যালেন্টিনের খুশি আর ধরে না। ওটা ছিল একটা লাল হার্টবিস্ট। কংগনি নামেও পরিচিত এক ধরনের অ্যান্টিলোপ। তিন বছরে পৌঁছাতে পৌঁছাতে গায়ে গতরে বেশ বড় হয়ে উঠল সে। সিরগার সঙ্গে তখন খেলাধূলায় মানিয়ে নেওয়া কঠিন হয়ে পড়ল ওর মানব বন্ধুদের জন্য।
সিরগার এই গায়ে গতরে বেড়ে উঠা সবার জন্যই বড় একটা সমস্যা হয়ে দেখা দিলেও, ভ্যালেন্টিন ব্যতিক্রম। বলা চলে তিন বছর বয়স থেকে সিরগার মা-বাবা-বন্ধু সব হয়ে উঠলেন তিনিই। সিরগাও আপন বলতে চেনে কেবল ভ্যালেন্টিনকে। প্রতিদিন সকালে কান খাড়া করে থাকে। খাঁচার দরজাটা খোলার শব্দ হতেই দৌড়ে এসে হাঁচড়েপাচড়ে ভ্যালেন্টিনের কোলে উঠে পড়ে। বলা চলে এক মানব শিশু মা-বাবার সঙ্গে যেমন আচরণ করে অনেকটা তাই করে। তারপর দুই বন্ধুতে খানিকক্ষণ চলে কোলাকুলি আর নর্তন-কুর্দন।
তিন বছর হওয়ার পরই জটিল একটা দায়িত্ব চাপে ভ্যালেন্টিন এবং তাঁর সহকর্মীদের কাঁধে। সিরগাকে আবার প্রকৃতিতে পুনার্বাসন করতে হবে। অর্থাৎ নিজের খাবারের ব্যবস্থা নিজেই করা উচিত তার এখন। সে ব্যাপারেও ভ্যালেন্টিনের মাথাব্যথা সবচেয়ে বেশি। দিনের সিংহভাগ সময় কাটতে থাকে সিরগাকে শিকারের পাঠ শিখিয়ে। প্রত্যাশিতভাবে খুব দ্রুত শিখে ফেলতে থাকে সে। একটি সিংহীকে শিকার শেখানোর কী-ই বা আছে! তবুও সপ্তাহে তিন দিন নিয়ম করে বের হতে থাকেন ভ্যালেন্টিন। পাঁচ থেকে ৯ ঘণ্টা চলে প্রশিক্ষণ। বন্ধুকে শতভাগ না শেখানো পর্যন্ত সন্তুষ্ট হতে পারছেন না। একটা অ্যান্টিলোপকে কাবু করে ফেলে সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই মেরে ফেলে না সিরগা। বিড়াল যেমন ইঁদুরকে নিয়ে খেলতে ভালোবাসে, ঠিক তেমনি খেলতে পছন্দ করে। এভাবে ক্লান্ত হয়ে যাওয়ার পর সারে ভোজ।
শুরুর দিকে ভ্যালেন্টিনসহ অন্যরা সিরগাকে নিয়ে ঘুরতে বেরোতেন। সে ছিল এক দেখার মতো দৃশ্য। তবে পরে দু-একজন কর্মচারী সিরগার হালকা নখের আচর খেলে শুধু ভ্যালেন্টিনই ওকে নিয়ে হাঁটতে বের হতে লাগলেন। তবে পরে জার্গেন জজফওয়িকজ নামের একজন বন্যপ্রাণী বিশেষজ্ঞ ভিডিওগ্রাফার সঙ্গী হোন তাদের অসাধারণ গল্প ধারণ করার জন্য। এর ফলাফল হিসাবেই আলোর মুখ দেখে পুরস্কারবিজয়ী তথ্যচিত্র সেভিং সিরগা : জার্নি ইন টু দ্য হার্ট অব এ লায়ন’। এ বছর মুক্তি পেয়েছে এর দ্বিতীয় পর্ব আই অ্যাম লায়ন।’
সিরগাকে একেবারে বুনো পরিবেশে আর পাঠানো যাবে কিনা বলা মুশকিল। তার কারণ এই নয় যে ভ্যালেন্টিন সিরগার শিকার ক্ষমতা নিয়ে সন্দিহান। বরং মানুষের সঙ্গে তার ভাব-ভালোবাসাটা বড় বেশি। তাদের ভয় পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনাও শূন্যের কোঠায়। এ জন্য জঙ্গলে পাঠিয়ে দিলেও সিরগা লোকালয়ে হয়তো প্রায়ই হানা দেবে। অথবা চলে যাবে মানুষের বেশ কাছে। তাতে চোরা শিকারিদের হাতে প্রাণ সংশয় হতে পারে সিংহীটার। ভ্যালেন্টিনের মতো আর কারো সঙ্গে এত বন্ধুত্ব নেই তার। ভ্যালেন্টিন মনে করেন, ছোটবেলা থেকে সে তাঁকে দেখে অভ্যস্ত। অন্য কোনো সিংহের সঙ্গেও থাকা হয়নি। তাই তাঁকে নিজের প্রজাতির একজন বলেই ভাবে।
অবশ্য সিরগার জন্য ভ্যালেন্টিন যা করেছেন, তাতে এই নির্ভরতা আসাটাই বরং স্বাভাবিক। তিন বছর টানা পার্ক ছেড়ে কোথাও যাননি তিনি, কালেভদ্রে বাজার করতে শহরে যাওয়া ছাড়া। সিংহ-মানুষের এই বন্ধুত্ব যেন ছাড়িয়ে গিয়েছে কল্পনাকেও। অনেক চ্যানেল আগ্রহ দেখিয়েছে এটি নিয়ে তথ্যচিত্র বানানোর। এরই মধ্যে ছয় পর্বের প্রামাণ্যচিত্র ‘লায়নহার্টের’ শুটিং শেষ হয়েছে। মুক্তি দেওয়া হবে বছরের শেষে। সিরগাকে ছেড়ে আপাতত কোথাও যাওয়ার ইচ্ছা নেই ভ্যালেন্টিনের। সব কিছু বাদ দিয়ে পড়ে আছেন বতসোয়ানায়। যেদিন মনে হবে, বড় কোনো বনে দাপিয়ে বেড়াতে পারবে সিরগা, সেদিনই ছুটি মিলবে তাঁর।
তবে কথা হলো সিরগাকে খুব বেশি মানুষের সঙ্গে মেশানো হয়নি। এবং ভ্যালেন্টিন কড়া নজর রেখেছেন যেন চিড়িয়াখানা বা সাফারি পার্কে থাকা সাধারণ সিংহদের মতো খুব বেশি পোষা জন্তুর ভাব তার মধ্যে চলে না আসে। তবে ভ্যালেন্টিনের মনে হয় সে অর্থে ছুটি মিলছে না।
২০১৬ সালে বতসোয়ানা সরকার এভাবে সিরগার ঘুরে বেড়ানোতে আপত্তি জানায়। কারণ ওই এলাকাটা স্যান বুশম্যানদের এলাকা, একটা দুর্ঘটনা ঘটলে তখন? এরপর থেকে সিরগার বেষ্টনীর মধ্যেই তাকে সঙ্গ দেওয়া শুরু করেন ভ্যালেন্টিন। তখন থেকেই নতুন এক স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করলেন, সিরগার জন্য নতুন এক এলাকার সন্ধান লাভ, যেখানে সিরগা প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশে শিকার করতে পারবে, কারো জন্য সে ঝামেলার কারণও হবে না। তেমনি শুধু ছোট প্রাণী তার শিকারের তালিকায় থাকবে না। বিপুল পরিকল্পনা ও প্রশাসনিক তৎপরতার পর বতসোয়ানা সরকারের অনুমতিতে সিরগাকে নথিভুক্তভাবে ভ্যালেন্টিন গ্রুয়েনারের কাছে হস্তান্তর করা হয় ২০১৭ সালে।
৩০ নভেম্বর নতুন বাড়িতে ওঠে সে। অবশ্য এর জন্য ভ্যালেন্টিনকে ভক্তদের মধ্যে অর্থ সংগ্রহের প্রচারণাও চালাতে হয়েছে। এতেই বেষ্টনীর মধ্যে ২০০০ হেক্টর বা ২০ বর্গ কিলোমিটারের এই নতুন আস্তানা মেলে দুজনের। এখানে প্রচুর প্রাকৃতিক শিকারও মিলছে সিরগার। শুধু তাই নয় জায়গাটিতে অন্য সিংহের গতিবিধিও চোখে পড়ছে। কোনো কোনো সিরগাভক্তর আশা হয়তো এদের মধ্যে কাউকে বন্ধু হিসাবে বেছে নেবে তরুণী সিরগা। তবে ভ্যালেন্টিনের আপাতত নজর সিরগার বাসস্থানের আশপাশের বেষ্টনী তৈরি সম্পন্ন করা। অর্থ জোগাড়ের কাজও অব্যাহত রয়েছে। তা ছাড়া সরকারের পূর্ণ অনুমোদনের জন্যও এটা জরুরি।
