ঢাকা থেকে সিলেট যাচ্ছি, আন্তনগর পারাবত এক্সপ্রেসে। পথেই পড়ে আমার নানার বাড়ির স্টেশন হরষপুর। ওই স্টেশন পেরিয়ে আরো অন্তত ঘন্টা দেড়েক চলার পর হঠাৎ একটা জায়গায় দাঁড়িয়ে পড়ল ট্রেন। জানালা দিয়ে তাকিয়ে ছিলাম বাইরে, ট্রেন ভ্রমণে এই কাজটাই সবচেয়ে আনন্দ নিয়ে করি। চমকে উঠলাম, আশ্চর্য সুন্দর এক পৃথিবীতে চলে এসেছি। এই অচেনা রাজ্যে ঘন গাছপালার ঠাসবুনোট। হাত দশেক দূরে একটা গাছ ভেঙে কাৎ হয়ে আছে আরেকটার ওপর। এক ডাল থেকে আরেক ডালে উড়ে যাচ্ছে পাখি। ওদের সঙ্গে সমান তালে ডাকছে পোকামাকড়েরা। এ ছাড়া আর কোনো শব্দ নেই। নেই লোকজনের বিরক্তিকর কোলাহল। যতটা সময় ট্রেনটা দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল মোহাচ্ছন্ন হয়ে ছিলাম, তারপর আবার যখন যেমন হঠাৎ থেমেছিল তেমন আচমকা ছেড়ে দিল, তখনই বাস্তবে ফিরলাম। ঘটনাটা আজ থেকে অন্তত বছর কুড়ির আগের, এইচএসসি পাশের পর সিলেট যাচ্ছিলাম শাহজালাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি পরীক্ষা দিতে। ঢাকা ফিরে আসার পর জানতে পারি ওটাই লাউয়াছড়া।
অবশ্য এর আগেই লাউয়াছড়ার কথা শুনেছিলাম। তবে যে কারণে আলোচনায় আসে অরণ্যটি সেটা মোটেই আনন্দের কোনো বষয় ছিল না। ১৯৯৭ সালে টিভির পর্দায় শ্রীমঙ্গলের লাউয়াছড়া অরণ্যে আগুন লাগার খবর দেখে কেঁপে উঠেছিল বুক। সেই লকলকে শিখার ছবিটা এখনো ভাসে চোখের সামনে। বহুজাতিক তেল-গ্যাস কম্পানি অক্সিডেন্টালের মাগুরছড়ার অনুসন্ধান কূপে আগুনটা লাগে। লাউয়াছড়া আর মাগুরছড়া একই জঙ্গলের অংশ। বিভীষিকাময় ওই দাবানলে কয়েক ট্রিলিয়ন ঘনফুট গ্যাস ও প্রচুর গাছ পুড়ে, তবে সবচেয়ে ক্ষতি হয় জঙ্গলের বন্যপ্রাণীদের। কেউ আগুনে পুড়ে, কেউ পালাতে গিয়ে মারা পড়ে, অনেকে আবার অন্য অরণ্যে সরে পড়তে বাধ্য হয়। ২০০৮ সালে আরেক বহুজাতিক কম্পানি শেভরনও অনুসন্ধান কাজ চালাতে গিয়ে লাউয়াছড়ার ক্ষতির কারণ হয়।
ট্রেন থেকে দেখা বাদ দিলে প্রথম লাউয়াছড়া গেলাম কবে? এই তো মুশকিলে ফেলে দিলেন। সালটা সম্ভবত ২০০২-০৩। মাগুরছড়া কূপের আগুনের ক্ষতের চিহ্ন তখনও জ্বলজ্বলে। ওই অভিযানেই প্রথম উল্লুক দেখি। অবশ্য ড. রেজা খানের বাংলাদেশের বন্যপ্রাণী (প্রথম খন্ড) বই পড়েই জেনেছিলাম ভানুগাছ বন বিশ্রামাগারের পাশের গাছে নিয়মিত উল্লুক দেখা যাওয়ার কথা। অবশ্য আমরা দেখি বনের আরো গভীরে। হঠাৎ জঙ্গলে তীব্র শোরগোল শুনে মনে হয়েছিল বুঝি বা একসঙ্গে অন্তত গোটা পঞ্চাশেক জন্তু হৈ-হল্লা করছে। তবে কাছে যেতেই পরিষ্কার হলো। গোটা পাঁচ-ছয় হবে সংখ্যায়, তবে এদের ডাক প্রতিধ্বনি তুলে গোটা অরণ্য কাঁপিয়ে দিয়েছে। এরপর অনেকবারই গিয়েছি। তখন হবিগঞ্জের মাধবপুরে নানা বাড়ি গেলেই সাতছড়ি কিংবা লাউয়াছড়ায় যাওয়া ছিল রুটিন। এমনও হয়েছে খুব ভোরে রওয়ানা হয়ে জঙ্গল ঘুরে রাত নয়টা-দশটার দিকে নানার বাড়ি ফেরেছি। কখনো মামাত ভাই অনিক, কখনো সমবয়সী মশিউর কিংবা মুনিরকে সঙ্গে নিতাম। নানি বাড়িতে বেড়াতে এসে গোটা সময়টা জঙ্গলে কাটিয়ে দেওয়ায় খুব মন খারাপ করতেন। এখন নানিই নেই।
তখন এরকম নানান পায়ে হাঁটার ট্রেইল ছিল না। যেদিকে ইচ্ছা ঘুরে বেড়িয়েছি। তবে বন থেকে খাসিয়া পাড়ার দিকে যেতে পথে যে ছড়াটা পড়ে সেটা প্রথম দেখাতেই মন কাড়ে, যখনই যাই ওটায় পা ডুবিয়ে কিছুক্ষণ দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা চাই।
নানার বাড়িতে ছোটবেলা থেকেই কক্কা কক্কা শব্দে যে জিনিসটা ডাকত সেটাই যে তক্ষক জানা ছিল না। পরে জানতে পারি। লাউয়াছড়ার বন বাংলোয় যখন প্রথম বার উঠি তখন ডাইনিংয়ের দেয়ালে আমাদের থোরাই কেয়ার করে ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছিল প্রমাণ সাইজের কয়েকটা তক্ষক। তবে দ্বিতীয়বার যখন বন বাংলোয় উঠি তখন এদের ডাক শুনলেও দেখতে পাইনি। আমার নানার বাড়িতেও শুনেছি এরা আর নেই। লোভী মানুষেরা যেভাবে তক্ষক ধরছে, তাতে লাউয়াছড়ার তক্ষকগুলোর এখন কী হাল কে জানে?
লা
লাউয়াছড়ায় যখনই গিয়েছি পাহাড়ের ওপর খাসিয়া পাড়ায় যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছি। অদ্ভুত সুন্দর, স্বচ্ছ জলের এক ছড়া পেরিয়ে পাহাড়ের গায়ে মাটির সিঁড়িপথ ধরে হেঁটে বেশ লাগে পাড়াটায় যেতে। স্ত্রী পুনমসহ গিয়েছি বার তিনেক। ও তো খাসিয়া পাড়া থেকে গাদা করে পান কিনে এনেছিল আমার শ্বাশুড়ি আর নানীর জন্য। ওই পাড়ায় একটা কথা বলিয়ে ময়না দেখেছিলাম। পাড়ায় ঢুকবার মুখে শুকরলেজী বানরেরা লম্ফঝম্পের মাধ্যমে স্বাগত জানিয়েছিল বছর দুয়েক আগে।
জঙ্গলে বৃষ্টিতে ভেজার মজাই আলাদা। কেয়ারটেকার আলি ভাইয়ের ভাগ্নে এগারো-বারো বছরের সুমনকে নিয়ে এক ভোরে লাউয়াছড়ায় আঁশ মিটিয়ে বৃষ্টিতে ভিজেছি আমি আর পুনম, রাতে ইচ্ছামতো চষে বেরিয়েছি অরণ্যে। তবে পরেরবার গিয়ে, সুমনকে আর দেখতে পাইনি। ওর মার কাছে চলে গিয়েছে শুনে ভারি মন খারাপ হয়েছিল পুনমের। বাংলো থেকে দূরে ট্রেনের শব্দ শুনলেই পুনম হুড়মুড় করে দৌড়ে যেত পাহাড়ের ঢালু পথ ধরে। যদি ট্রেন আসার আগেই রেললাইনের ধারে পৌঁছা যায়। জঙ্গলের ভেতর এই ট্রেন ছুটে চলার দৃশ্যটি অদ্ভুত সুন্দর। তবে ট্রেনের শব্দ বন্যপ্রাণীদের জন্য এক সমস্যা। আমার ধারণা ট্রেনের সঙ্গে বন্যপ্রাণীরা যতোটা মানিয়ে নিয়েছে জঙ্গলের ভেতর দিয়ে যাওয়া পাকা সড়কটার সঙ্গে ততটা পারেনি। কারণ ট্রেনের চেয়ে বাস-ট্রাক বা গাড়ির নিচে চাপা পরেই বেশি বন্যজন্তু প্রাণ হারায়।
লাউয়াছড়ায় কখনো কখনো টুকটাক সমস্যায়ও পড়তে হয়েছিল। একবার পাকা সড়কের ডান পাশের তুলনামূলক অচেনা একটা পথে ঢুকেছিলাম অনিকসহ। একপর্যায়ে বেরোবার পথ খুঁজে পাচ্ছিলাম না। অনিকের তো রীতিমম কাঁদো কাঁদো অবস্থা হয়ে গিয়েছিল। অন্তত বছর তেরো- চৌদ্দ আগের ঘটনা ওটা। বিয়ের পর প্রথম লাউয়াছড়া যাই ২০১৪-তে। তখন একটা কাণ্ড হয়। পুনম এমনিতে সাহসি, তবে ওর তীব্র সাপ আর জোঁক ভীতি আছে। তা প্রথম দিন বিকালের দিকে আমরা বের হলাম। রেঞ্জারের নির্দেশে এক ফরেস্ট গার্ড নিমরাজি হয়ে আমাদের সঙ্গী হলেন। কিছুক্ষণ ঘুরাঘুরির পর ওই বনপ্রহরী প্রস্তাব দিলেন একটা শর্টকাট ধরার। পুনম গাইগুই করতেই বললেন এই পথে বন্যপ্রাণীর দেখাও মিলতে পারে। এর মধ্যে পুনম কয়েকবার জোঁকের ব্যাপারে জানতে চেয়ে বনপ্রহরীকে নিজের দুর্বলতার জানান দিয়েছে। পথটায় ঢুকার একটু পরই আবিষ্কার করলাম রীতিমত জোঁকের আড্ডাখানা এটা। যখন বের হয়ে এলাম প্রত্যেকের শরীরে জোঁকেরা মহানন্দে জেঁকে বসেছে। পুনমকে তখন সামলানো ভারি মুশকিল হয়ে পড়েছিল। পরে বাংলোয় ফিরে ও অভিযোগ করে ইচ্ছা করেই ওই বনপ্রহরী আমাদের ওই পথে নিয়ে গিয়েছিল! মেয়ে ওয়াফিকারও আমার সঙ্গে থাকতে থাকতে এখন জঙ্গল পছন্দ। ও দুইবার গিয়েছে লাউয়াছড়ায়।
এবার একটু ভিন্নপ্রসঙ্গ। ছোটবেলা থেকেই গল্পের বই পড়া আমার নেশা। সেই সূত্রে ক্লাস ফাইভ-সিক্সে পড়া অবস্থাতেই সেবা প্রকাশনীর রূপান্তর করা জুলভার্নের আশি দিনে বিশ্বভ্রমণ, রহস্যের দ্বীপ, সাগর তলে, বেলুনে পাঁচ সপ্তাহ বইগুলো পড়া হয়ে গিয়েছিল। পরে লাউয়াছড়া নিয়ে খোঁজ খবর নিতে গিয়ে জানতে পারি দুনিয়া কাঁপানো বই অ্যারাউন্ড দ্য ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন এইটি ডেজ অবলম্বনে ১৯৫৬ সালের একই নামের চলচ্চিত্রটির শুটিং হয়েছিল ১৩ দেশের যে ১১৪ স্থানে এর একটি লাউয়াছড়া। লাউয়াছড়ার ভেতর দিয়ে যাওয়া যে রেলপথ মোহিত করে পর্যটকদের সেই রেলপথেই শুটিং হয়েছিল চলচ্চিত্রটির। এটা জানার পর জঙ্গলটির প্রতি আমার আগ্রহ আরো বেড়ে যায়। হুমায়ূন আহমেদের আমার আছে জল ছবির শুটিংও হয় এই অরণ্যেই। তবে আমার মন এখনো আটকে আছে অ্যারাউন্ড দ্য ওয়ার্ল্ড ইন এইটি ডেজের দৃশ্যটাতেই। চাইলে যে কেউ ইউটিউবে শুধু এই দৃশ্যটিও দেখে নিতে পারেন।
লাউয়াছড়ায় ঘুরতে গেলে বনের ভেতরের খাসিয়া পাড়াটার পাশাপাশি মূল সড়কের পাশে টিলার ওপরের মাগুরছড়া খাসিয়া পাড়াটতেও ঢু মারতে পারেন, তেমনি বন পেরিয়ে চলে যেতে পারেন আনারস বাগানে। তবে ছোট্ট বন হিসাবে লাউয়াছড়ার ওপর পর্যটকের চাপটা বেশি। তার চেয়ে বড় সমস্যা ইচ্ছামতো হৈ-হল্লা করেন তারা, আর অনুযোগ করেন কোনো বন্যপ্রাণী চেহারা দেখাচ্ছে না। ওদের দেখা পেতে হলে আপনাকে অরণ্যে যেতে হবে খুব ভোরে, না হয় সন্ধ্যায়। সাহস একটু বেশি থাকলে এবং অনুমতি পেলে রাতেও ট্রাই করতে পারেন! তবে যখনই বনে ঢুকেন না কেন চলতে হবে পা টিপে টিপে, জঙ্গলের নিয়ম মেনে, তাহলে বন্যপ্রাণীরাও বিরক্ত হবে না, আপনাকেও হয়তো খেয়ালই করবে না। আর নিজের বাড়িটাকে যেভাবে পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখি আমরা অরণ্যটাকেও সেভাবে রাখতে হবে, কারণ এটাও তো বহু বন্যপ্রাণীর আস্তানা।
